Innovation Industries’ portfolio company Encapson successfully raises Series B financing to boost the market introduction of Sono-Coat™ and accelerate its growth

Enschede, August 1, 2016 - Encapson BV, a Dutch medical device coating company based in Enschede has raised a Series B financing round to boost the market introduction of Sono-Coat™; an echogenic coating to enhance the ultrasound visibility of medical devices such as needles and catheters. Sono-Coat™ is based on the use of acoustically reflective microspheres in a coating matrix. Sono-coated™ catheters and needles reflect more of the ultrasound signal back to the ultrasound probe providing unsurpassed ultrasound images. Twente Technology Fund, a fund managed by Innovation Industries and Encapson's first and major investor, participated in this financing round with PPM Oost, NextGen Ventures and other investors.

Solmates and MESA+ institute publish on lead-free piezo thin films for MEMS

For MEMS applications the best of class piezo materials such as lead-zirconium-titanate (PZT) are lead (Pb) containing. From environmental aspects it is highly desired that in near future these materials are replaced by lead-free piezo materials. Solmates and MESA+ demonstrated in the February issue of Materials Letters that by using potassium-niobate (KNN) thin films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition a piezo performance of about 50% compared to PZT could be achieved. By using additional doping and process tuning the researchers intend to further increase the piezo performance to the same level of lead-containing materials.
